Getting Started

Is Mevo still operating?

Yes. Mevo is operating in Wellington and Queenstown. The business was bought out of administration and relaunched under new ownership, and cars are back on the road.

How do I sign up?

Download the Mevo app, fill in your details and take a photo of your driver licence. There's nothing to pay to join.

What licence do I need?

A current full New Zealand licence, or an overseas licence from one of NZTA's approved countries. You'll upload a photo of it during sign-up.

Do I need a membership?

No. You can pay as you go with no monthly fee. Memberships exist for people who drive regularly and want lower hourly and daily rates.

How quickly can I start driving?

Approval usually takes minutes rather than days. Once you're approved you can book a car straight away.

Where you can drive

Where can I pick up a Mevo right now?

In Wellington, cars are operating around the CBD, from Thorndon to Te Aro, as well as at the airport.More cars are heading onto the street shortly. Queenstown is also live.

Is Mevo in Queenstown?

Yes. Mevo operates in Queenstown, using the same app and the same rates as the rest of the country. If you used the service under its previous name, your account carries over.

Where can I park and end my trip?

End your trip inside the zone, in a signposted Mevo bay, a metered park, or a coupon zone. You can't end a trip in a P60 or shorter space, a clearway, a bus lane, a loading zone, a private or supermarket carpark, or another operator's car-share bay.

Can I take a Mevo out of the city?

Yes. Take it wherever you're going — the only rule is that it comes back and the trip ends inside the zone.

Can I take a Mevo on the ferry?

No. Mevo cars can't be taken on the Interislander or any inter-island ferry.

Is there an airport surcharge?

Yes — picking up or dropping off at the airport carries a surcharge, charged per leg. Driving in and out without ending your trip doesn't incur it.

Cost and cars

How much does a Mevo cost?

From $19 an hour or $95 a day, with 50km included per trip or day. Members pay less.

What's included in the price?

First tank and charge is on us, parking, insurance and road user charges are all included in the rate. You're not paying for any of those separately.

Is there a deposit or a booking fee?

No deposit and no booking fee. You pay for the time and distance you use.

What if I go over the included distance?

Distance beyond the included 50km is charged at $0.39 a kilometre. Memberships include more free distance and a lower per-kilometre rate.

What cars does Mevo have?

A mix of compact hatches, mid-size cars and SUVs. You can see exactly what's nearby and pick the one you want in the app before you book.

Do I need to charge or refuel it?

Your first tank is on us. If you need more than that during your trip, you cover it — there's a fuel card in the car. Just bring it back with at least 30% in the tank.

What if something goes wrong on a trip?

Use the chat in the app, or call 09 909 8410 if it's urgent. Roadside assistance is included.

What is Mevo Subscribe?

A car of your own for weeks or months rather than hours, on a weekly rate that includes insurance, servicing, registration, WOF, tyres and roadside. No lease and no deposit.

Ownership Change

Is this the same company as before?

The brand is the same, the company behind it isn't. Mevo is now operated by Carshare NZ Limited, part of the Carbn Group.

Why are there fewer cars than there used to be?

We're rebuilding deliberately. Cars get added as the ones already out there get used, rather than all at once. It's a slower way back and it's the reason this one lasts.

Do I need to sign up again?

Yes. It's a new app and a new account, so everyone starts fresh. Sign-up takes a couple of minutes and approval is usually immediate.

What happened to my old Mevo credit?

Unfortunately not. Mevo is now operated by Carshare NZ Limited, which acquired the Mevo brand and certain assets out of the previous company's liquidation, but not its accounts, balances or liabilities. Any credit sits with the previous company, Mevo Limited, and its liquidation rather than with us.

BDO are the appointed liquidators and Simon Macpherson is the contact for claims. If you had a balance, you can lodge it with them.We know that's not the answer anyone wants, and we'd still like to have you back on the road.
